It is a ship which the Mauritians have always shared with pride the secrets, particularly when Bernard De Saint Pierre wrote a book about it entitle  “Paul & Virginie”.

A vessel of 28 guns, it was launched on the 11th of July 1736. The captain Laurent du Plessis drove it on his first voyage from Lorient to Pondicherry on the 11th of November 1737 and returned on the 14th of June 1739. Then captain Poree de la Toche took the command.

The Saint Geran got shipwrecked on the north of Ile de France on the 17th of August 1744, island which is known today as Mauritius. It was the Captain Richard de Lamarre who accompanied the Saint Geran to its destiny, having on board a crew of 149 men, 13 passengers & several slaves…..
